ARCHIVE: SELECT OLDER WORK
OTHERLAND is a collaboration between visual artist Benny Ferdman, Yiddish singer/composer Michael Alpert & Ukrainian bandurist/singer Julian Kytasty which combines a series of art installations on a California mountain trail with musical, spoken word and movement compositions. Thru the lens of their respective traditions and the complex, intertwined history of Jews & Eastern Europe, the artists will lead participants on a journey through culture, nature, transplantation and multiple identities in the dramatic meeting place of cityscape and wildness that the diverse Los Angeles area embodies. The installation and video, In the Sack of the Wind (below) is the first experimental piece, exhibited at American Jewish University, Los Angeles in 2010. It reflects on the poem by the great Yiddish poet, Avraham Sutzkever.
